About Bali
Bali is an island and province of Indonesia, and includes a few smaller neighboring islands, notably Nusa Penida. Bali is the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts. Bali offers the tourists a beauty of looming volcanoes and lush terraced rice fields. Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, the area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. In this area alone over 500 reefs building coral species can be found. Scuba divers of all levels can enjoy the magnificent diving in Bali. The best dive sites for beginners are around Amed, Padang Bay, and Pulau Menjangan which have very gentle or often no current at all. Bali offers numerous opportunities for advanced divers as well, with its many drift dives such as near Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Candidasa. Amed has many fantastic spots for Muck Diving. Deep drop-offs and steep banks, coral ridges, famous wrecks, volcanic outcrops and sea grass beds are all a part of the local underwater landscape.
Some of the most interesting dive sites include Menjangan Island, USAT Liberty Wreck, Tulamben Drop-off, Crystal Bay, Close Encounters, Napoleon Reef. Divers interested in rare and diverse marine life will be delighted to dive in Secret Bay and Seraya Secret.
When to go to Bali
The diving season in Bali is all year long. The best conditions for diving are between May and November. The giant sunfish, or by other name Mola Mola, and some other large pelagics are best spotted between June and October. December through March is considered the rainy season, although on most days it doesn't rain. Temperature ranges between 23-30C/73-86F in coastal areas throughout the year. The water temperature usually fluctuates between 24-29C/75-84F. The average water depth around Bali island varies from 5m/16ft to 40m/131ft depending on the site. Currents can be very strong in some areas. The water visibility is very good and ranges from 10m/33ft to 45m/148ft.
What to see
Coral reefs are very healthy. The hard and soft corals are magnificent and mostly untouched, with numerous sea fans and sponges. Mola Mola, manta ray, barracuda, giant trevally, white tip reef shark and black tip reef shark, ornate ghost pipefish, mimic octopus, leaf fish, frogfish, pygmy seahorse, flamboyant cuttlefish, rare nudibranchs and so much more can be observed here by divers. Turtles are also very common around the island.
