About scuba diving in Belize

Belize is situated on Central America’s Caribbean coast and has a reputation as one the region's best diving destinations. Don’t miss the chance to scuba dive in Belize. Scuba diving in Belize is a great place to explore the richness and variety of the underwater world. From shallow, clear reefs to spectacular drop-offs, Belize offers different activities for divers of all experience levels. Each Belize dive destination offers shallow coral gardens or reef flats, great schools of groupers, snappers, barracudas and jacks, as well as reef sharks, bull sharks, moray eels, stingrays and turtles. In addition to the spectacular scuba diving, there is a wealth of ancient Mayan ruins to discover and miles of tropical rainforest sheltering exotic species. A popular dive area is Ambergris Caye, with its shallow reefs that are home to a high level of species variety. One of the most popular dive sites is Lighthouse Reef, known for its breathtakingly deep walls, soft coral and sponge gardens and some spectacular spur and groove formations. There is a great mix of large pelagics and small reef creatures, and it is home to the world-famous Great Blue Hole. Another of the major dive sites is Turneffe Atoll, whose series of mangroves provides a haven for juvenile species. There are excellent drift dives to be had here, featuring larger marine animals. Other great dive sites are Glover’s Reef (UNESCO World Heritage site), Tobacco Caye, Southwater Caye Marine Reserve, Stann Creek District and Laughing Bird Caye.

When to go to Belize

Belize is an excellent place for diving year-round. February and March are the driest months. March to June has the occasional rainfall and August to October is considered the wet season and is a more likely period for hurricanes. Visibility remains constant year-round at 10-40m/32-131ft. Water temperatures average 26-30C/79-85F in summer and a "low" of about 26C/79F in winter. As with many dive destinations, currents here are variable, ranging from calm at some of the tranquil cay sites to ripping at Hol Chan. March to June is whale shark season in Placencia, in the south of the country.
