Scuba diving in Boonsung Wreck
The Boonsung Wreck is located north of Khao Lak. It is a popular site among divers. The Boon Sung Wreck was an old tin ore processor that was deliberately sank in 1984. During the tsunami of 2004 the 60m/197ft -long wreck broke into 5 sections. Since it was scuttled, the wreck has been attracting an incredible wealth of marine life. Often the schools of fish are so dense that divers can hardly see the Boon Sung on their descent. Penetration is not recommended due to the age of the wreck, the large amount of rusty metal, and the extensive coral growth. Some divers say that the Boon Sung is not a real wreck anymore, but instead, a well-populated reef and a great dive.
When to go
The high-season is between October and May. The average air temperature varies from 25C/77F to 33C/91F. The water temperature ranges from 27C/81F to 30C/85F.
What to see
Abundant macro life and a large number of schooling fish can be found at the wreck site, including different species of nudibranchs, scorpionfish, batfish, trevallies, some species of moray eels, stingrays, yellow snappers, and barracudas.
