When to go to Costa Rica

Diving season in Costa Rica is year-round. The rainy season runs from May to November. With its tropical and subtropical climate, Costa Rica has good diving conditions and water temperatures average 26-29C/78-84F. From December through March, cooler currents bring water temperatures as low as 19C/68F, along with large animals such as humpback whales, pilot whales, giant manta rays and whale sharks. During whale season (January, February and March) it is possible to hear the haunting calls of humpback and pilot whales while diving. Humpbacks can also be observed in June and July as they migrate from the southern hemisphere. Water visibility averages 15-30m/45-90ft. The June to September period generally offers the best visibility. Currents can be strong off the northern Pacific coast whereas they are normally milder along the southern Pacific coast.
