Isla Holbox, located on the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, is a small protected island, only 7miles long and 1 mile wide. Isla Holbox is an area favored by many migratory species of birds and attracts a lot of bird watchers. The island has no cars and features pristine beaches and beautiful sunsets. The whale shark tour is the most popular tour here. Usually between June and September, when the ocean becomes especially rich with plankton, whale sharks arrive in these waters to feed and mate. Despite their impressive size, whale sharks are so docile and gentle, that they allow swimmers and snorkelers to swim up close to observe them. Although, visitors are instructed not to touch them.

When to go

Water temperature averages 26-30C/79-86F. Whale sharks can be met in local waters from June till mid-September.

What to see

Besides whale sharks, schools of wild dolphins, turtles, stingrays and other marine species can be seen around the island.
