About scuba diving in Maldives

The Maldives are an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands grouped into 26 coral atolls (200 inhabited islands, plus 80 islands with tourist resorts) in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives are the perfect destination for those who like to spend a time on beach and enjoy the sun, however, there are also a lot of activities as well. It is not a secret that Maldives are world- famous diving destination. Scuba diving at in Maldives is a great place to explore the richness and variety of the underwater world. The warm seas of Maldives have high visibility throughout the year, with water clear enough to see the passing fish as far as 50m/164ft away at times. Between the Islands, there are channels connecting the Indian Ocean to the Lagoons. In the channels, possible to explore the caves, caverns and overhangs where soft corals proliferate, and there is a riot of colourful sponges, invertebrates and gorgonian fans all profiting from the nutrient-rich water. The best location for big pelagic fishes is called the Ari Atoll and most of the liveaboards visit it. Maldives has some wonderful sites for scuba diving. Most of the dives are drift dives, making it more suitable for experienced divers. But there are also very good dive sites in the lagoon for beginner divers too. Maldives also offers to discover a few wrecks. Depth is from 5m to 40m/16-131ft. The best channels for diving in the Maldives with reef sharks are at - Lhaviyani, North and South Male, Vaavu, Meemu, Laamu and Gaafu (probably the best). Among the best dive sites are: Rasdhoo Madivaru, Mushi Mas Mingili Thila, Maaya Thila, Hafza Thila, Brocken Rock, Kudarah Thila, Halaveli Wreck and much more.

When to go to Maldives

Maldives are a year round destination with tropical climate. The temperatures around 30C/86F throughout the year. However, rainfall increases considerably during the April-October southwest monsoon, particularly from June to August. January to April are the best months for diving here. Average water temperature ranges from 27C to 30C/80-86F year round. Average visibility from 15m to 40m/49-131ft depending on the season and location. The visibility is not as good during the rainy season (May to August). The High Plankton density in May reduces visibility but attracts manta rays and whale sharks. Current depends a lot on tide and location, ranges from none in the lagoon to very strong in the channels. What to see This water coming from the ocean is full of plankton and nutrients which, in turn, attracts an incredible marine life, including eagle rays, Napoleon Wrasses, lots of pelagic fishes such as the giant trevally or the barracuda, the magnificent manta rays and the very rare whale shark. It is also possible to see here whitetip, grey reef shark, and hammerhead shark.
