Pescador Island is located in the Tañon Strait, a few kilometers from the western coast of the island of Cebu in the Philippines. It is a marine sanctuary. The underwater scenery of Pescador island reef consists of a sandy slope covered with soft coral to about 5-10m/16-33ft and a wall covered with hard corals dropping down to about 40m/131ft. On the west side of the island, an open-top underwater cave nicknamed ‘the Cathedral’ can be found. Most recreational dive tours start at the southern end of the island.
When to go
Diving is available year-round. The average annual temperature ranges between 24-32C/75-89F. The average water temperature ranges around 27-30C/80-86F with the average visibility of around 20m/65ft.
What to see
The major attraction that draws lots of tourists to Pescador island is a large number of resident schools of sardines that amount to tens of thousands of fish stirring the waters. These small fish attract many predators including tuna, barracuda, jacks, crocodile needle fish and thresher sharks. Whale sharks and hammerhead sharks have also been reported. The average depth is 50m/164ft. It is a boat dive and it is recommended for experienced divers.
