Punta Sur is the home of the widely acclaimed Devil's Throat, that is an underwater cave formation located offshore at Punta Sur. Devil's Throat is actually a dark and narrow, almost vertical tunnel through the coral reef structure. It starts at approximately 27m/88ft of depth and opens up at approximately 40m/131ft, right at the edge of recreational dive limits. The stalagmites rising from the cavern floor look like miniature temple spires, and stalactites descending from the ceiling are equally magnificent. The formation also includes an underwater cave referred to as Catedral (The Cathedral).

When to go

The climate varies from tropical to desert. Average high temperature from May to November ranges from 28C to 32C/82-89F.

What to see

The deeper coral walls have whip corals, lare black corals, also angelfish, butterfly fish can be seen. This site is known for its unusual cross-shaped sponge formations on the ceiling of the cave, with a shaft of light from one of the tunnels striking the cross from behind as if it were deliberately illuminated.
