Sabalos received its name after the schools of Sabalos/Tarpon that can be seen here while diving Playa del Carmen reef. The reef consists of healthy hard and soft corals of different types. There are many kinds of colorful reef fish, including starfish, that can be seen in the area. Near the end of the dive divers will find a small cavern for exploration. Sabalos is one of the most demanding of the shallow reef dives due to the strong currents which are quite frequent. Thus, as soon as descended divers are advised to swim to where the reef meets the sand and stay close to the bottom. Also, in order to be more protected from the currents divers should move along the edge of the reef.
