St. Martin/St. Maarten is an island that has been shared by the French and the Dutch for a long time. The border is almost imperceptible and people cross back and forth. The French side has a more genteel ambiance, more fashionable shopping and a Continental flair. Besides lots of different activities, St. Martin offers a great scuba diving that is available for divers of all levels. Diving in Saint Martin/St.Maarten will be an adventure and an exciting scuba diving experience. The beautiful blue waters and the stunning underwater world can be explored while diving in St. Martin/St. Maarten. The diving is generally shallow, typically around 18m/60ft, and the sites are a mixture of artificial reefs, wrecks, old coral reefs, and encrusted rocks. The turquoise waters off Saint Martin are teeming with hidden treasures such as multicolored fish, rays, turtles, seashells, crustaceans, coral, seaweed and marine plants. There are over 45 listed diving sites on St. Martin that offer something interesting for every diver. There are numerous wreck sites, but probably the most famous one is the Proselyte Reef with the remains of the frigate HMS Proselyte which sank in 1801. Other worth visiting sites in the Dutch side of Saint Martin include Gregory Wreck, The Bridge, The Maze, and Fish Bowl. Popular French side dive sites are The Tugboat, Circus, Basse Espagnole, and fantastic snorkeling site Creole Rock just off the coast in Grand Case. Also the best snorkeling spots are coral reefs at Dawn Beach, Friars Bay, Pelican Key and Pinel Island, where there is an underwater snorkeling trail.

Scuba diving is possible throughout the year. Saint Martin/St.Maarten is a year-round destination. The period between December and May is considered the dry season, while June through November is considered more humid. High diving season runs from December to the end of April. The average air temperature around coastal areas ranges from 22C/72F to 30C/86F and the inland areas, from 19C/66F to 27C/81F. Water temperature stays around 29C/84F in the summer and 26C/79F in the winter. Average visibility varies between 20-30m/65-98ft. There are no strong currents here usually, Approximate depth of the dives is around 20m/65ft.
