About Yucatan

The Yucatán Peninsula is a famous dive region in Mexico due to its great diving conditions and several unique dive sites. Divers of any experience level can find ideal places here. There is no area in the world with as many underwater caves as the Yucatán Peninsula’s Riviera Maya. This coastal region, stretching from just south of Playa del Carmen to Tulum, has over 100 different cave entrances. The Peninsula is also world-famous as a unique place for cenote diving. Cenotes are sinkhole-like cave formations where you can dive through caverns with amazing stalactites, stalagmites and marine fossils, with a visibility of up to 150ft/50m, and where even the halocline or freshwater/saltwater interface is visible. There is also the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is the second largest coral reef system in the world. Over 60 types of hard corals form a vast network of reef that in turn provides a habitat for over 500 fish species and five species of marine turtles, and attracts one of the world’s largest congregations of whale sharks.
