About Busuanga Island

Busuanga Island is the biggest island in the Calamian Group, between Palawan and Mindoro, which consists of several hundred islands. The island is home to a wildlife sanctuary and is also leading to some of the most outstanding diving spots. Rugged, steep limestone rocks, solitary white sand beaches and turquoise-colored water are all attributing to fantastic scenery. There are shallow coral gardens, enchanting freshwater lakes and underwater grottos, also many ship wrecks of WW II. The area around Busuanga is home to very different dive sites which is suitable for divers of all experienced levels.

 

Most popular dive sites

One of the most interesting wreck dive site is the Taiei Maru/Okikawa Maru, situated just south of Concepcion Village in Busuanga. This coral covered ship wreck is about 2.5 hours from Concepcion. The average depth here is 16m/52ft and the maximum depth is 26m/85ft. Not far between the Lusong and Tangat Islands, Palawan, is the Olympia Maru wreck. In between Lajo and Manglet Islands is other exciting Japanese wreckage, the Akitsushima, which sunk in 1944 near Coron. Also there is Japanese freight Kogyo Maru that sunk at the end of the Japanese War and located just south of Olympia Maru and very near to Lusong. More than 20 ships were sunk in this area and about half of them are interesting to dive on. One of the popular dive sites is Cathedral Cave, which has a rocky drop off at about 30m/98ft and a long tunnel that connects to an underwater cavern. Also there is Dumunpalit Island – a great site with pink soft corals from the shore to 25m/82ft in the deep. Pelagic species can be found along the slope.

When to go to Busuanga Island

Diving in Busuanga is available year-round with best time from October to May, when the waters are calm and not targeted of tropical storms. The air temperature averages 25-32C/78-90F. The water temperature is from 28C/82F to 30C/86F depending on the season. The best visibility is from May to November (no plankton), the average visibility 7-30m/22-98ft.

Plankton Season is from December to April (better chance to see manta rays, whale sharks and whales).

 

What to see

Busuanga has an abundant marine life including big jacks, fusiliers, barracudas, scorpion fish, crocodile fish, triggerfish, batfish, clownfish, nudibranchs, tubeworms, various of corals, Spanish mackerels, black and white tip sharks.
