Gulf of Aqaba is a large gulf of the Red Sea, located to the east of the Sinai peninsula and west of Arabian mainland. It is one of the world's premier sites for diving- the area is especially rich in coral and other marine biodiversity. Thus from graceful Hawksbill turtles, to fluorescent nudibranches, the Red Sea is home to over 1200 species of fish, more than 500 species of coral, and 1000 different mollusks and crustaceans. The coral is healthy and vast, and slowly improving each year since the opening of the Aqaba Marine Park. Much of the Gulf of Aqaba is deep (more than 1,800m in depth), but the northern sector near Aqaba has a relatively shallow shelf. Sites are suitable both for novice and experienced divers; experienced divers should not miss the chance to go down at night. Most of the dive sites in Jordan are close to shore, sites are presented by reefs, walls,canyons, there are number of underwater wrecks. Among the best wrecks are the Cedar Pride (10-25m/32-82ft)- a must for all and fantastic for photography, and ideal for technical divers breathing air are the wrecks of the Taiyong (scuttled in 1999) and the Al Shorouk (scuttled in 2008) -both in the 35-55m/114-180ft range. Other great dive sites are Gorgone I & II, Kiwi reef, Abdallah reef, Aquarium House Reef, Eel Canyon, Japanese garden, Seven Sisters and Tank. It is a paradise for photographers and sea critter lovers alike. Generally,there are no strong currents.
