Honduras (officially the Republic of Honduras) is a republic in Central America, which is borderes to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Honduras is best known for the production of minerals, coffee, tropical fruit, and sugar cane, as well as for its growing textiles industry, which serves the international market. Major international airports are in San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa (Toncontín), and Roatán. Honduras is situated at the southern end of the second largest barrier reef in the world. Scuba diving in Honduras will not disappoint even the most seasoned divers. Honduras is a great choice for diving because it has colorful sea life, lots of beautiful dive sites, and interesting underwater topography. The Caribbean Coast of Honduras is home to the Bay Islands: Útila, Roatán, and Guanaja, where diving is actually popular. Diving in Honduras is suitable for divers of all levels of experience. The Bay Islands are one of the most diverse areas of the Caribbean. Most of dive sites in the Bay Islands are generally close to shore. Roatán lies 53km/33mi off the coast of Honduras and is the most commercialized of the islands. Lush coral growths, including rare black coral, can be found in underwater canyons, crevices, walls and reefs. The spectacular coral reef surrounding the Roatan Island is part of the second largest coral reef system in the world. There are hundreds of fabulous dive sites, such as Odyssey Wreck, Hole in the Wall, Mary's Place, Spooky Channel, Cara a Cara Shark Dive, Blue Channel, West End Wall. Útila has 2 marine reserves, and 60 buoyed sites around the island, some of the best include Airport Caves, Black Hills, Blackish Point, Halliburton Wreck and Duppy Waters. Guanaja is located the farthest east (about 18km/11mi). It offers many dive sites that feature world-class diving, including pinnacles, volcanic caverns, wrecks, and a variety of fish, but Guanaja is the most remote and undeveloped of the three Bay Islands.

When to go to Honduras - Roatan

Honduras is hot and humid almost year-round. The rainy period is from May through October, and the dry season is from November through April. The hurricane season is from June to the end of November. An average air temperature varies from 23-32C/73-89F, and the period from July to October is the hottest. The average water temperature varies from 26-29C/79-84F all year round. Currents are mostly mild, but can vary by location. The visibility can be from 15-45m/49-148ft, being best from February through June. There is a high diversity of marine species, including dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, grouper, barracudas, angelfish, butterflyfish, grunts, manta rays, schools of blue tangs, parrotfish, yellow tail snappers, horse eye jacks, octopi, lobsters, crabs, moray eels, hammerhead sharks, and even whale sharks. There are lots of dive sites and some of the most popular are Hole in the wall, Mary's Place, Spooky Channel, Blue Channel, Odyssey wreck and West End Wall .
