District of Riviere Noire is the Western part of the island of Mauritius. During the summer season large schools of fish come close to the island attracting larger predators. This district is known for its beaches, vibrant coral reefs, turquoise lagoons and several underwater wrecks. It is one of the most popular dive regions in Mauritius. There is a wide range of interesting dive sites to explore, especially around La Morne and Flic en Flac. At Flic en Flac the underwater cliffs and caves turn the sea floor into an intricate maze. Worthwhile dive sites are La Cathédrale, Rempart Serpent reef, Japanese Garden, La Passe St.Jacques, Casiers, Needle Hole, Tug II.
The tropical climate makes diving possible year round. November to March are considered to be the best time for diving, though divers should be avare of occasional cyclones in January and February and in July-August. Water temperature throughout the year varies from 23-27C/73-80F, and from October to April the water temperature reaches 30C/86F degrees.
What to see
While scuba diving in these waters divers will see pods of dolphins, parrot fish, sea bass, wrasses, morays, variety of lobsters, fire fish, eagle rays, large tuna and sharks, marlins and a huge variety of corals.
